The Dower House
The Dower House is a striking old house, very conspicuous from the M32 motorway. Some bits of it date from the 16th century, but most of it was built about 1760.
The House was rented to the Reverend Burden in 1908 for £150 a year for 21 years. Rev. Burden had just returned from missionary work in the backwoods of Canada, but he and his wife were keen on social work and used the house to set up a colony for "backward children". He must also have had a hand in the Burden Neurological Institute which was nearby for a long time. This whole area is big on hospitals, psychiatric institutes, asylums, etc.
Duchess Pond, below, is a recently made pond below the Dower House.
Here is a heron and some ducks. This area is about half an hour's walk from Easton, through Eastville Park and along the Frome valley.
A fallen log reflecting the trees.

Plate of Dower House,by Wedgewood for Catherine II of Russia, 1774
that's all most interesting but can you let me know what the house is used for today?
I wouldn't mind going for a walk here
Sorry, I don't know what it's used for now - I think it might be private flats.
Pray tell us Steve. What is a Dower House. I believe they have one on the Archers.
Look, I just took a photo of the bloody place and looked up a link on the net, I'm not an expert on Dower Houses.
If I was an expert on Dower Houses, do you think I'd be sitting here writing this? No, I'd be drinking champagne on the Costa del Sol, probably.
In fact, it tells you if you click on the link, but to save you the trouble it's something about what is left to a widow - the recipient of a dower is a dowager.
They do have one in the Archers and it belonged to Caroline Pemberton nee Bone, and indeed she used to live there before she moved in with Guy. Funnily enough Caroline is a rich widow, or at least she was before she married Guy. And another thing, how come you know who I am if I'm submitting my comments as anonymous? I should sue you under the trade practices act.
I don't know many anonymous people(apart from sinksinksocks, but he's a bit strange), so it wasn't too hard to work out.
